Massport Has Futuristic Plans For Logan Airport’s Terminal E

Boston Logan International Airport

Boston’s Logan Airport is about to get curvier.

Massport selected engineering firm AECOM and Madrid-based luis vidal + architects for the next phase of modernizing its 44-year-old Terminal E. The winning design features a sloping, red roof designed to follow the sun’s path. The architecture firm is also proposing two north-facing skylights. These “eyelashes” will protect the interior from direct sun exposure.

“Elegance and welcoming are the two words that come to my mind when I think of Boston,” luis vidal + architects founder and architect Luis Vidal said in a prepared statement. “When designing Massport’s extension to Terminal E, we wanted these words to become part of its DNA.”

The architecture firm has experience designing several international airports, including Terminal 2 at London's Heathrow Airport. The Boston international terminal project is part of a $750M infrastructure plan to renovate and expand the airport in light of Logan’s international traffic surge, the Boston Globe reports. Terminal E was build to accommodate 1.5 million passengers each year. Six million international passengers frequented the terminal last year.

Massport wants to add seven gates to the 12-gate terminal to better accommodate the increased passenger load. The airport operator completed a $160M project in 2016 to enable the terminal to accommodate three Airbus A380s, the world’s largest passenger aircraft, at the same time.

AECOM worked on the A380 project and terminal renovation and will provide architectural and engineering services on over 400K SF of new and renovated terminal space with the new contract. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2022.
