DODGEBALL DERBY

OK, so when we were kids, dodgeball was a circle game, all about rolling a ball at someone?s feet to get them out. Forget it. Last night, at Commodore Builders? 4th Annual DB Tournament, we saw how grown-ups play. The T-shirt above says it all (although there were no trips to the emergency room that we're aware of). We snapped Commodore?s Tom Comeau, Jim Stadler, and Andy Fraser psyching themselves up for the battle. In fact, Jim?s Evil Empire did come out on top. But he says the best part of the evening was ?knowing everyone had a good time and no one got hurt? (amazing). Afterward, dozens of thirsty players retreated to the Harp for post mortems, ridicule, and of course, networking.
Seventeen teams with at least 200 contractors, architects, brokers, designers, developers, and landlords showed up at Basketball City to strut their stuff. Sidestepping some of the profanity, the teams included: Commodore?s No B---s, No Glory and The Misfits, LDA Architects? LDAssassins, studio TROIKA's The Dog?s Bullocks, Leggat McCall's Leggat United, the Cresa Gold Getters, EOP?s Summer Street Brawlers, Nickerson PR?s Red Hots, SMMA's SMMAck Attack, Gensler?s Raging Ball, Visnick Caulfield?s Fistfull of B---z, ADD Inc?s glADDiators, and the Dyer Brown Demolition. Each team includes at least one woman, someone is out when hit by a ball, no headshots (not photos, blows to the head), and a team wins when they eliminate all opposing players.
We went a little John Madden here to show you where the ball is.Jim Stadler, who organized the tourney, explained that people in the same professions played each other, like Cresa Partners vs. EOP and the glADDdiators vs. the Raging Ball. Jim hit on the idea as a fun way to hang out with ?great partners in the industry?, who work together project after project, but hardly ever see each other in between. Jim also hopes that when the economy picks up, he may be able to turn the sweat fest into a fund-raiser for one of Commodore?s charities.
