| That headline just makes us think of the movie Spaceballs, but it actually references National Volunteer Week—yup, that's right now. Business Volunteers Unlimited Maryland's annual celebration of that fact, Do Something!, was on Monday at the American Visionary Art Museum, where Public Allies CEO Paul Schmitz (here with BVU Maryland director of programs and leadership Jim Dickinson) gave a keynote saying everyone can create change in their communities. |
| Also all smiles (and wearing genetically similar shirts) were BVU Maryland exec director Kelly Hodge-Williams and OneMain Financial (formerly CitiFinancial) chief administrative officer Janet Smith. Kelly tells us the corporate support side of her business helps 60 companies like Ballard Spahr, Continental Realty, The Time Group, and WPM Real Estate Group support their volunteer efforts. For Cassidy Turley, for example, BVU has matched eight execs with non-profit board of director positions, including Jennifer Bowers, who sits on Hampden Family Center’s board. BVU also set Cassidy Turley up with the City Springs School to do everything from facilities work to mentoring. |
| Cassidy Turley's Charles Wagandt was in last year's BVU GIVE class of 40 young pros who attended workshops, studied local social issues, volunteered, networked, and fundraised together. Charles tells us he was born in Baltimore and joined the cohort upon his return from Yale Business School and a honky-tonking stint in Nashville in order to learn more about his community and its opportunities and needs. He also tells us he missed the big end-of-the-year party because he was on his honeymoon. The jury is still out on that excuse, but we congratulate him nonetheless.
