CAMPUS TRENDS

We've heard post-grads are moving in with parents, but it may make more sense to fail a few classes and stick around, considering how Bergmeyer architects and designers are updating college housing.
We snapped Mike Davis, Darryl Filippi, and David Turbidy in their Fort Point office last week. They're wrapping up construction documents for a 261-bed residence hall at Endicott College overlooking the ocean in Beverly. Slated for completion August 2011, site work will start June 1 on the design/build project with Windover Construction. The design goal was to create an outdoor courtyard for students to hang out or study. Inside, colors have maritime resonance and the layout strives to get kids out of rooms and into community spaces with ocean views. And forget about the fitness center or laundry in the basement. These amenities are set in prime corner locations.
Patricia Carroll and Lewis Muhlfelder Jr., workplace interiors specialists, designed the 20k SF office of the Federal Public Defender across from the courthouse on Fan Pier. Work there revolves around the library (pictured above). To bring light to this space, the duo installed sliding glass walls and linear lighting that's bright, but not harsh. Since it's mostly private offices, Lewis says corridors are extra wide so it doesn?t feel like a rabbit warren.Warmly colored inset panels hang throughout the office. A dream interior to design for Lewis? The office of Bill Gates or Steven Hawking. For Pat, a beautiful space for a non-profit arts group.
We found Matt Hyatt, Sarah Hewins, and Dan Pawlak in the project room where they've been designing TD Bank retail stores for two years. Three weeks ago, the first opened in Queens Village, NY, a dozen more will be underway soon, and a total of 40 by year end, all aiming for LEED Gold or Platinum. Matt says at first the bank asked for a prototype. Soon that morphed into a kit of parts. That way, each bank can be designed specifically for its site and location. Sarah says they used Revit from the start, making it manageable to do 2,000 sheets of drawings for 138 design iterations.
