There may be a new rising star in Boston's film scene as developer Rise moves forward with plans to construct a movie studio 20 miles outside the city in Braintree.
Rise has acquired the development rights for the Banner Park campus in Braintree, a 123-acre site permitted to host a planned 275K SF production studio lot, it announced Friday. Rise acquired the site from Onshore Properties, which got approvals to make the studio possible.
The project will include soundstages, pre- and post-production facilities, and offices to support major television and film productions, the Boston Globe reported.
“It is rare to have the opportunity to work with a movie studio component within such a dynamic campus,” Rise founder Herby Duverné said in a statement. “Braintree is a wonderful community, and we are looking forward to the conversations with neighbors as we move forward with this exciting project.”
Colliers represented Onshore in the property sale. The campus has a 20K SF office building that will be demolished to make way for the studio, the Globe reported.
The developer will bring some community benefit payments to Braintree and the town of Weymouth, including funds for traffic and infrastructure improvements and a partnership with New England Wildlife Centers to build a new trail system that connects Braintree, Weymouth and Holbrook. The trails will connect to a large community dog park.
The site has a history of film production, being the home of major companies like Apple Studios and Netflix. Massachusetts doesn’t have a film industry on the same scale as California or Georgia, but Banner Park isn't the first movie studio that has been planned or opened in the state.
Last year, Red Sky Studios, a Boston-based film production company, was in talks to begin construction on a studio that would include at least two soundstages, 10 WJAR reported.
Quincy studio owner Marina Cappi expanded her studio into Canton last year after the success of her first. The two studios were the first ones closer to Boston. New England Studios has four soundstages on a site in Devens.
