Bond at 107, Dialed In

Tucked away in industrial Everett, a107-year-old constructioncompany doesn?t worry about getting old. BOND is tech savvy,using BIM and iPads to plan the construction of Harvard Business School?s $120M Tata Hall, which aims for LEED Platinum, saysJim Keefe, right, its lead superintendent. We snapped Jim withFrank Hayes and Charlie Connor at their Everett office where he filled us in. On Friday, Ratan Tata, chairman of India?s Tata Group raised a shovel at the groundbreaking for the complex to which hedonated $50M. Bond is the GM for the state-of-the-art, 165k SF executive education facility designed by William Rawn Associates.
The fourth generation family firm, now led by Edward Bond, has over the years expanded into the construction of buildings from its roots in civil and utilities jobs. In this slow economy, it's kept its350 employees busy with a focus on academic work. Rose Conti, here with Greg Williamson, is overseeing a 20k SF renovationand 19k SF addition to Wentworth Institute of Technology?s Center for Sciences and Biomedical Engineering. Rose says that the project, designed by Perkins+Will (started in May, due for completion Q3 ?12) is a living lab for WIT. BOND gives guided tours of the site, has hired WIT coop students, and added grads to its staff.
David Shrestinian is with Chris Fogg who, as BIM manager, is playing a major role in several projects, including the $65MBoston University East Campus Student Services Center. The Bruner Cott-designed project (started in May, due for completion next June) is on a tight schedule—which means zero room for error. Take the 36-inch concrete encased duct bank that provides the entire south campus with fiber optic service. The 100-foot crane that dug the foundation couldn't even knick the duct. It didn't... thanks BIM.
