UWS Historic District Expanded by More Than 300 Buildings

The NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission voted Tuesday to accept the Riverside-West End Historic District Extension II, which will add to the landmarked zone more than 300 buildings along West End Avenue and Riverside Drive, between West 94th and 108th streets. Locals got a surprise when they learned that Public School 75 will be included. What won't be included are several new buildings on Broadway, because they create what LPC researcher Lisa Keresavage said was an "uneven streetscape" and a "lack of cohesion" with older structures, DNAInfo reports. Also not included are three tenement buildings on West 96th Street, and a playground next to PS 75. The City Council has 120 days to modify or disapprove the extension. The extension means the district as a whole now covers some 1,200 buildings between West 70th and West 108th streets. [DNA]
