West Side Story: City-Owned Parking Lot to Become 100% Affordable Tower

A city-owned parking lot on the west side that is used by the NYPD will eventually become the site of a residential building featuring 100% affordable units. The New York Economic Development Corp confirmed on Friday that it will be seeking proposals for an all-affordable tower at 493 11th Ave, with retail and community space on the lower levels. This comes as a unanimous decision from community and MCB4 members alike, DNAInfo reports. The site was once home to a slaughterhouse for the New York Butchers' Dressed Meat Co before it closed in the late 1950s. Earlier this year, Curbed reported that the proposed building would be roughly 45 stories and 300 units. Community suggestions for the space include a green building with "facade articulation" (to add some excitement to the design) and a rooftop space, along with an affordable supermarket, a nonprofit theater and an affordable daycare.
