Anthony Bourdain's Food Market Vision Revealed

New York

Anthony Bourdain travels the world for exotic foods and now he's bringing a taste to NYC. In about two years, the host of shows like No Reservations, The Layover and Parts Unknown will open Bourdain Market, and after a year of buzz, details are finally available.

The massive 155k SF market will encompass the main concourse and mezzanine of Pier 57. It'll feature about 100 retail and wholesale food vendors from all of the world, ranging from mom-and-pop establishments to food stalls operated by April Bloomfield and Ken Friedman of The Spotted Pig.

Bourdain says the heart and soul of the project will be a Singapore-style hawker market with communal dining areas surrounded by street vendors from around the world. There will also be a "wet market" where butchers and fishmongers do their dirty work. The $60M installation is expected to get 20,000 visitors a day. One challenge? It will involve a lot of visas for small vendors. [NYT]
