Drop by our Facebook group for almost 20 more photos!

NYU Schack Institute's annual symposium drew 700 REIT-minded pros to see dean Ken Patton present Starwood Capital Group CEO Barry Sternlicht with the Visionary Award. Sticking with the "Black Swans, Black Holes. . . and the Light at the End of the Tunnel" theme, Barry's keynote was fairly lighthearted (complete with smiley face PowerPoint). He says be optimistic. Choose to believe the world is not going to end. We're a growing nation, which will bail us out of this mess; it's not a question of if, but when.

We snapped Wachtell Lipton's Adam Emmerich, moderator of the first panel, which featured some of the industry's hottest investors: Equity Group Investments' Sam Zell (remember that tiny $39B deal?), Vornado's Steve n Roth, and AREA Property Partners'William Mack. Sam says we're separated from a lot of problems, still growing, and have the great advantage of lack of regulation. There's out of control pessimism, he adds, but we can pick up and start again.
