Why People Move Away from Westchester and to Travis County, Texas

Placeholder

Westchester County had only 10% affordable homes last year and lost population, according to a new report by Community Housing Innovations. Compare that to Travis County, TX, where Austin is, and 27% of homes for sale were affordable for a family of four making the median income. The upshot: people moved away from Westchester and flocked to Travis County (and promptly fleeing town for the weekend of South by Southwest every year). Folks leaving Westchester took $536M of taxable income with them from 2006-11, while Austin’s home county showed a net gain of $2.1B in taxable income over those same six years.
