Grab-And-Go Grocery Technology Could Soon Hit The Market
Standard Cognition, a startup based in San Francisco, wants shoppers to get their groceries faster and more efficiently.
The company, which raised $5M in funding this week, is attempting to create an artificial intelligence-based technology that will allow shoppers to grab an item from the shelf and walk out without having to wait in line to pay for it, TechCrunch reports.
The technology will remain simple. Standard Cognition will be using a slightly more sophisticated camera than a standard security camera and will connect it to an app that shoppers can use. While the camera would be able to pick up on details such as the fruit being purchased, it would not include facial recognition to ensure data remains anonymous.
The camera will be able to identify shoppers as they enter, determine what they are carrying and later bill them for the products once they are finished shopping.
Standard Cognition will be targeting larger retailers but is also looking to appeal to smaller stores and mom-and-pop shops that could benefit from customers moving quickly through the store.
Walmart and Amazon have tested similar apps, though Walmart's scan-and-go app would not be hands-free, as is the case with Standard Cognition's technology.
