A new White House report says artificial intelligence is almost certain to destroy millions of jobs, hurt poor people and worsen America’s enormous class divide, but concludes we need it.

It’s all about productivity—the report says we need AI to boost the country’s economic growth, which could lead to higher wages and fewer work hours over the long run, the Washington Post reports. To offset the devastation AI will bring to low-wage jobs, the report says the federal government should boost access to education in technical fields while increasing unemployment benefits.

But given President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign pledges, that would be unlikely under his administration. The report also calls for further investment in AI research, saying the tech could prove particularly useful for cyber defense and detecting fraud. [WaPo]
