FAA Approves Some Real Estate Drone Use

The Federal Aviation Administration has eased a ban on the use of drones for real estate marketing purposes that it instituted this summer. Four companies got the FAA's permission today to employ drones for commercial means in an unexpected move from the agency. The architecture and engineering firms Clayco and Woolpert received permits and will be free to survey construction sites with the unmanned flying aircrafts.

VDOS, which monitors off-shore oil rigs, and agriculture logistician Trimble also received the FAA permits. The agency has been grappling with how to ensure the safe use of commercial drones and especially how to avoid collisions with other aircraft, with the popular privacy debate surrounding drones a peripheral concern. A broader FAA proposal for regulations is expected this month.
