Amazon Wants To Dominate India’s Online Market, Booting India’s Flipkart Out Of The Lead

Amazon is looking to dominate India’s online market before the country's Diwali shopping season commences.

The Diwali celebration, the festival of lights, is India’s largest retail event—shoppers are known to spend $1.7B online during this time of year. In an effort to beat out the country’s top online retailer, Flipkart, Amazon will invest $5B by June in its India business.

The e-commerce behemoth has been recruiting sellers like crazy, and is even deploying white-and-orange Chi Carts with emissaries in charge of teaching sellers how to list inventory and oversee returns.

Amazon is going after the new or dormant shopper, and the strategy seems to be working, Bloomberg reports. Last week, Bisnow caught wind that Walmart was considering investing up to $1B into India’s Flipkart as the firm heats up its battle against Amazon for e-commerce dominance. But we have yet to receive any confirmation on that transaction. [Bloomberg
