Wharton Professor Says REITs Learned From Financial Crisis

REITs learned a great deal during the financial crisis of the 2000s and those that took prudent action before and during it have been rewarded by shareholders. Susan Wachter, a finance professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, shared these and other thoughts during REITWeek 2015: NAREIT’s Investor Forum in NY. Susan feels that overall REITs had prepared well for the crisis, but after the financial market meltdown investors did punish the riskier capital structures. She added, “I think it’s fair to say that no one understood the depth of the crisis that we were going into."[REIT]
