The University of Pennsylvania announced plans to build a $1.5B hospital complex on its main campus in Philadelphia.

The 1.5M SF hospital is the most expensive project ever announced by the university. It will include 500 private rooms and become part of the Penn Medicine health network, Construction Dive reports. The university expects the project to be complete by 2021.

Despite the enormous cost, new medical centers like these are becoming more common. The Mayo Clinic is building a $6B medical center in Minnesota, and last week construction firm Mortenson announced it completed the design and site selection for the above building. Virtual Health System is also planning a $1B medical center in New Jersey.
