Carson Counsels Against Making The Poor Too Comfortable

Placeholder

Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson recently toured facilities for the poor in Ohio, and it seems the experience did nothing to shake his “tough love” ideologies.

Prior to his HUD appointment, Carson had no government or political experience and grew up poverty-stricken in the gritty streets of Detroit. The neurosurgeon-turned-housing leader believes offering too much support will cause people to be dependent on the government, the New York Times reports. President Donald Trump proposed cutting HUD’s budget by over 13% to eliminate programs like Meals on Wheels, and though Carson said he believes there are problems with these programs, he does not support eliminating them entirely.

Many of the residents Carson visited said his tour felt forced and choreographed, mostly to snap pictures of him with residents.
