Googie Gives Way to 'The Foundation'

An old bowling alley in South LA has reopened as The Foundation Center, a new space for educational advancement programs. Cuningham Group architect Jacqueline Squires tells Bisnow the non-profit wanted a complete overhaul of the interior, which was previously in the classic Googie style from the '50s, including a big sign and some quirky art. The 25k SF building on 2.3-acres is being used as office space for The Foundation, the non-profit, and can also be rented out for community events.

The Foundation picked up the property in 2011 and Cuningham went to work shortly thereafter. The $3.3M reno did include retaining some of the classic exterior, including the well-known zigzag wall near the entrance, the large cantilevered canopy above it and a semi-circular wall and roof hole near the front door.
