Rally Held By Backers Of Better Build LA Initiative

Placeholder

It was a show of force outside the Medici Apartments in DTLA as dozens of demonstrators gathered yesterday morning to show their support for Proposition JJJ, or the Build Better LA initiative, a ballot measure aimed at providing more affordable housing and increasing labor jobs in LA.

The protesters screamed out chants against developer Geoffrey Palmer, who is developing the luxury, "Fauxtalian" Medici Apartments.

Some asserted a lawsuit Geoffrey filed seven years ago that overturned LA's zoning requirements has exacerbated the affordable housing crisis, Curbed reports.

If the Build Better LA initiative passes in November, developers would have to hire 30% of the construction workers used locally and give incentives to developers who build near transit stops.

There would also be a new affordable housing requirement for projects that need special exemptions because they are bigger than city rules allow. [Curbed]
