H-E-B Announces First Multi-Level Store In Houston Area

H-E-B is redoing its store in Bellaire at 5130 Cedar, and it'll be something we've never seen in Houston. The redevelopment will be two stories and more than double the size of the existing 20k SF store, which was built in 1994. Construction won’t begin till 2017, reports the Houston Chronicle. H-E-B has had success with multi-level stores in Northern Mexico, one of its largest markets.

In addition to expanded parking, the store will feature a much wider variety of products and new specialty departments. The store connects the floors via a slightly inclined escalator that uses a magnetic strip to lock specialized shopping carts in place. H-E-B calls it a travelator. Fun. [Chron]
