After more than two years of planning, Cansortium Texas, one of the three companies that earned approval from the state to grow cannabis, has been awarded a license to grow by the Texas Department of Public Safety. The grant, given on Friday, allows the Compassionate Use Program to begin.

The Compassionate Use Act, passed in 2015, permits patients suffering from severe forms of epilepsy to access medical marijuana grown specifically to treat seizures. The marijuana is grown to have a high level of CBD, the healing component, and low levels of THC, the compound known for getting users high.

Surterra Texas and Compassionate Cultivation are still awaiting their final licenses. The three companies were selected from among 43 applicants.
