Why This Matters

Climate change and environmental factors have forced builders & owners to reexamine their building materials, carbon footprint and site selection. With Northern California geographic location, there are several environmental factors that pose threats to buildings; earthquakes, rising heat and forest fires to name a few. Contractors and builders are not sitting back idling as well. One such company that is leading the charge is Vert Asset Management and Group member Gary Pivo went on to say, “Real estate has a huge impact on the environment, but it’s also a huge opportunity…Buildings generate 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions, but reducing those emissions by reducing energy use is often very profitable.” Building green and sustainable will set the standard for the future. Glad to see some developers stepping ahead of the curve.

Building green and sustainable will not only make your property more desirable, but it will also save you cash where it counts. One of San Francisco largest developments, The Shipyard at Hunters Point, is a prime example. Bisnow’s Bay Area reporter Julie Littman goes on to say, “The Shipyard’s eco-grid will provide sustainable infrastructure from water to telecommunications. The development will use electricity from renewable sources with the intention of dropping natural gas and oil-fueled heating usage sharply.” The suitability component of the project is being headed by GI Energy, and their involvement will dramatically cut costs overall. Together we can help stop wasting energy and build smarter, greener and faster.
