San Francisco houses over 30 institutions of higher education that enroll more than 80,000 full-time students needing student housing. However, only nine of these schools provide any housing for their population, totaling less than 9,000 beds. Therefore, there is an estimated 60,000-bed shortfall for students. As a result, most students coming here to study are thrown onto the City’s housing market and compete for existing housing stock.
These 30 small colleges and universities worked with the Student Action Coalition to make it possible to build student housing.
Since 2016, approximately 2,700 beds for students have been made available or entered the pipeline. As we see these developments come to fruition, what will happen to demand for student housing? What policies have been or might be put into place and how will they affect the student housing market? How do current trends in alternative ways to stay impact the market?
