The world's largest Starbucks Reserve Roastery — 43K SF — is beginning construction to open next year.

The Chicago Department of Buildings issued a construction permit that will cover interior demolition of Crate & Barrel's Michigan Avenue flagship store. The location is closing after 27 years and will be renovated into the Starbucks Reserve.

Starbucks signed a full lease on the building in April and plans to renovate the five-story building's core, while adding a rooftop deck. Starbucks tapped Solomon Cordwell Buenz to handle the redesign, with principal Mark Frisch as the architect of record listed on the permit. The work covered under the permit is valued at $9.8M.

The Michigan Avenue Starbucks Reserve Roastery will be the third location in the U.S. Starbucks Chairman Howard Schultz cited history and location when he made the announcement last year; Starbucks' first location outside of Seattle opened in Chicago in 1987 at 111 West Jackson. Crate & Barrel will close its doors on Michigan Avenue by Jan. 24.
