Alderman Promises To Block Patio Theater Liquor License Application

Ald. Nicholas Sposato (38th) says he has reservations about a liquor license application filed by the landlord of the landmark Patio Theater, and plans to oppose it. Sposato says owner Eddie Carranza and operator Charlie Burns didn't formally contact his office before filing the application.

The Patio was sold for $2.5M last October, but it wasn't until December that Carranza was revealed as the new owner. Carranza's properties have had their fair share of problems. As owner and operator of Logan Square's Congress Theater, he amassed several failed building inspections and ran afoul of city officials, neighborhood residents and potential redevelopment partners. Carranza later bought the Portage Theater at 4050 N Milwaukee, hired Burns as the operator and promptly racked up more citations.

DNAInfo reports Burns "hinted" at having a ban on alcohol at the Patio, 6008 W Irving Park Rd, lifted before Sposato assumed office. Sposato says he's open to hearing Burns' proposal, but until the alderman's concerns are addressed, granting a liquor license is a non-starter. [DNA]
