Concert Review: D'Angelo at the Apollo

Placeholder

In honor of upcoming Valentine's Day, we thought you needed a dose of R&B. Last weekend we caught one of the most soulful voices of our generation, D'Angelo, doing one night only at the historic Apollo Theater in NYC (where he won amateur nights as a teen) after a 14-year absence from the music scene. Somehow, he picked up exactly where he left off, channeling icons from James Brown to Prince.

With his funky backing band The Vanguard, D'Angelo ran through hits ranging from his '90s debut, Brown Sugar, all the way to recently released Black Messiah, showing off vocal acrobatics and sensual prowess that had the audience screaming, dancing and swooning, simultaneously. The final song, a 14-minute rendition of his famous "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" with band members taking their final bow one at a time, was unforgettable.
