NBA Star Giannis Antetokounmpo Buys Chicago Apartment, Continuing CRE Acquisition Spree
Milwaukee Bucks star player Giannis Antetokounmpo dished out just over $21M for a Chicago apartment building, continuing his crossover into commercial real estate ownership.
An affiliate of Antetokounmpo's family office, Ante, bought a 56-unit, four-story apartment building at 4513 N. Clark St. on the North Side of the city, CoStar News reported. The property, called Harmony Apartments, was completed in 2024. The deal was brokered by Essex Realty Group, and Old National Bank backed it with an $11M loan.
The Windy City deal comes as Ante affiliates have invested more than $69M in acquiring a combined 186 apartment units across Wisconsin, Chicago and Brooklyn in the past few months.
Late last year, Antetokounmpo’s affiliate paid $25.2M to acquire 111 Clarkson Ave. and 520 Parkside Ave., neighboring buildings with a combined 50 units in the Prospect Lefferts Gardens neighborhood of Brooklyn. Ante also scooped up two properties in Wisconsin in the fall in separate deals worth about $23M combined and featuring 80 total units.
Antetokounmpo, born and raised in Athens and nicknamed the “Greek Freak,” is one of 15 players in NBA history to win multiple Most Valuable Player awards. In 2021, he led Milwaukee to its first championship in five decades with a 50-point effort in the series' clinching game.
Trade rumors have followed the nine-time All-Star this season, with the Bucks expected to make a decision on his future at some point this year. Antetokounmpo did not finish the team's game Friday against the Denver Nuggets because of a right calf injury, which he said he expects will keep him out for at least four to six weeks.
The star power forward has made $338M over his 12-year NBA career, according to Spotrac, not including any additional compensation for work off the court.
