Endangered Pilsen Church Receives $3M Gift

Ask and ye shall receive: St. Adalbert Catholic Church, the Pilsen church that has made Preservation Chicago's "Chicago 7" list of endangered buildings twice in the past three years, received a surprise gift that could jump-start plans to save the crumbling building.

A anonymous parishioner donated $3M to St. Adalbert. The parishioner received the sum from his aunt who died recently, along with instructions to forward it to the church when he died. Given the state of disrepair, he decided to donate the money to St. Adalbert immediately.

St. Adalbert is not out of the woods yet, CBS Chicago reports. The church still needs another $500k to fully fund the repairs. It also needs to submit a proposal to restore the church to the Archdiocese of Chicago, which announced earlier this year it planned to close the parish. [CBS]
