The Fort Point Channel waterfront is fast becoming Boston’s tech and innovation hub. Amazon is expected to locate a permanent office steps away from General Electric’s future campus.

The Seattle-based company is finalizing a deal to take close to 150K SF at 253 Summer St., the Boston Business Journal reports. In February, the e-commerce giant moved from Cambridge to WeWork in Back Bay while it looked at potential sites for a more permanent location in Boston. Those included Downtown Crossing’s Lafeyette City Center and Center Plaza in Government Center.

The Synergy Investments-owned 253 Summer has easy access to South Station and an exposed beam construction style that has appealed to the numerous tech and startup companies flocking to the neighborhood in recent years.

The 175K SF building was home to the insurance division of Partners HealthCare before the company consolidated operations at its new Assembly Row headquarters in Somerville.

The Fort Point property had previously been offered to executives with GE and Reebok when the companies were each looking for headquarters space in the area. Reebok wound up in the Innovation and Design Building in the Seaport, while GE broke ground on Monday on its Innovation Point campus a block away from Amazon’s future home.
