Kendall Square 2.0? Tech Hub Could Sprout In South End
A tech and life science hub could bloom at the site of the Boston Flower Exchange.
The Abbey Group presented redevelopment plans for its Albany Street property to the South End Forum Wednesday night. The developer bought the 5.6-acre site last year from the flower distributor co-op for $40M. Four buildings totaling 1.6M SF would rise around a one-acre park lined with retail and restaurants, the Boston Globe reports.
The preliminary proposal calls for building heights of at least 200 feet, making the development one of the tallest in the neighborhood. Abbey, which redeveloped the Landmark Center in Fenway before selling it to Samuels & Associates in 2011, also proposed improving the portion of the South Bay Harbor Trail running near the property. The developer told the South End neighborhood group it was trying to create a campus along the lines of Kendall Square and the Longwood Medical area.
