New Rules Will Protect Buildings From Rising Tides

2.21.13-brain-swett

For those who build new projects within a storms reach of an area waterway, new guidelines to limit damage and requirements for existing buildings are in the works, the citys chief of environment and energy Brain Swett tells us. For new buildings, transformers and other critical equipment should be placed on rooftops. (Sending an intern up there to hold a kite attached to a key isn't acceptable anymore.) Often, theyve been at grade to be easily reached for maintenance. But in our era of climate change, assume the worst, Brian warns. For existing buildings, owners should protect critical infrastructure at or below grade through flood-proof walls with sealants, operable doors that can be closed during storms, and a complete emergency plan.
