Westchester County, NY, used to compare itself to Travis County, but thanks to affordable housing here, we've blown it out of the water. According to a study by Community Housing Innovations, Travis County is benefiting from a huge boom of in-migration--in 2000, we had 100,000 fewer residents than Westchester, but now we boast 140,000 more. The big draw: 27% of Austin-area homes for sale are affordable for a family of four making the median income. Folks leaving Westchester took $536M of taxable income with them from 2006-11, while Travis showed a net gain of $2.1B in taxable income over those same six years.
