This month's theme was Punk Out!, which was inspired by Germany’s punk scene. Guests enjoyed a silent disco featuring punk music, David Bowie, after-hours access to the Phillips Collection exhibit by German artist Markus Lüpertz and a beer garden. Here, Devin Montgomery with UC Berkeley’s Sophia Slacik.

The exhibit features Lüpertz paintings ranging from his earliest works along with more recent paintings over his five-decade career. Lüpertz, who began painting in a postwar Germany dominated by American abstract expressionism and pop art, has exhibited a preoccupation with the relationship between figuration and abstraction over the course of his career. Among the works are important examples from Lüpertz’s “dithyrambic” pictures and provocative paintings of German motifs. Here, The Phillips Collection’s Vivian Djen, Maria Vizcaino, Remy Kauffmann and Victoria Potucet.
