Jesse Owens Mural!

Muriel Bowser is keeping busy! We also saw her Friday for the dedication of a mural in honor of Olympic gold medalist Jesse Owens. The 15’ X 15’ mural on the wall of The Reeves Center in the U Street corridor was presented on behalf of students from The Duke Ellington School of the Arts

The DC Office of Motion Pictures and Television Development (MPTD) in partnership with the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH), supported the mural, which was based on the students’ interpretation of Owens’ story. The Olympian, son of a sharecropper and grandson of a slave, won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, the first American track and field athlete to do so. The muralist, Mark Walker, right, is with the Ellington students.
