New Head at DCBF

Yesterday we also joined a crowd welcoming Kirra Jarratt to the helm of the DC Bar Foundation, the largest funder of legal services in DC. At a welcome breakfast at Arent Fox, we snapped firm chairman emeritus and DCBF board president Marc Fleischaker flanked by Washington Lawyers' Committee executive director Rod Boggs, former DCBF head Katia Garrett, Kirra, and Legal Aid executive director Eric Angel. Marc has a lot to celebrate this week: he was just named a Justice Potter Stewart Award winner by the Council for Court Excellence.

Here's DC Court of Appeals Chief Judge Eric Washington with Legal Services Corp VP and GC Ron Flagg. Ron, a DC Bar past president, started at LSC last year after spending 31 years with Sidley Austin, for more than a decade of which he was its pro bono chair.

We couldn't resist snapping Kirra with her mom. Kirra's a former legislative counsel in the ABA's Governmental Affairs Office, legislative director for Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton, and recently served on the DC Board of Governors. Marc Fleischaker (who made it into town just in time for the snow yesterday, after being in sunny Costa Rica) says two DCBF focuses will be immigration and landlord-tenant work. Much of the funding used to come from the IOLTA program, but after the recession, interest rates have been so low that DCBF's looked to the DC Council and further fundraising to make up the difference.
