2015 was a tough year for venture-backed exits. Only $9.4B was raised from 77 venture-backed IPOs in 2015, a 40% drop from 2014, according to the Exit Poll Report by Thomson Reuters and the National Venture Capital Association. 2015 also saw $16.3B worth of venture-backed M&As, the slowest full year since 2009. (Aren't those the two years that Adele released albums? It seems her haunting tones distract us from doing business.)

NVCA president Bobby Franklin says to keep in mind that the total number of IPOs for the year is down only 4% compared to 2013 and up 60% and 54% from 2012 and 2011. He also added that over 44 venture-backed companies have already filed publicly for an IPO and more filed privately this year, so the bench of companies making their debut on the public markets is deep.
