Affordable Housing Demands Creativity

Architect Michael Perry has an innovative idea to attach affordable housing on the sides of buildings. He's named the design the Cliff Swallow Apartment, after the bird's nest that inspired its shape. The temporary micro-unit would literally be attached to the side of existing buildings, UrbanTurf reports. The concept won the social impact award in AIA and Houzz's Future of Architecture Competition. A similar idea, the Keret House, also makes the most of underutilized space by incorporating tiny living, but where the Keret house has street access, the Cliff Swallow Apartment hangs above the street. The mini pad has a bed, a shower, a toilet and a kitchen, on two levels. [UT]
