Apartments Must Recycle Food Scraps, or Pay the Price

Placeholder

Apartment and condo buildings in Metro Vancouver that don’t have a system in place to recycle organic waste will face fines starting this Wednesday. On Jan. 1, the region officially banned organics from landfills and incinerators. So as of July 1, a hauler whose load contains organic waste that exceeds 25% of either the total weight of the load or the total volume of the load will be slapped with a surcharge that's 50% of the tipping fee. Residents of buildings without an organics waste diversion program can use food-scraps drop spots at farmers markets.
