Cookies-To-Condos Confusion

Mr. Christie's Bakery

Ever since Mondelez Canada announced the closure of Mr. Christie's Bakery come Q3, spokeswoman Stephanie Cass has "desperately tried to correct media reports" about alleged plans for 27 residential towers on the 27-acre site. "There's no plan for condos and never has been." The 65-year-old facility isn't worth modernizing and its lines will move to other Canadian plants. "We only asked for a study to see what the land can be used for now that it makes no sense for manufacturing," a reference to encroaching residential neighbourhoods. The possibility of rezoning ignited a political firestorm. Mondelez stresses that city planners will determine what uses are permitted. The site will fetch a better price if residential is permitted, but CRE consultants tell us only 110k SF of office space could replace the 550 lost industrial jobs.
