  As President & CEO of Life Science Washington (LSW), Marc sets the strategic direction, guides policy priorities, and directs business operations to ensure our members have the talent, investment, and partnerships needed to sustain the industry’s robust growth and solidify Washington state’s reputation as one of the top life science clusters in the nation. Marc also serves as the Chair of the Life Science Washington Institute, which is an affiliated non-profit focused on supporting life science entrepreneurs and growing start-up companies in Washington. Before taking the helm as President & CEO, Marc served as Vice President, Public Policy & External Affairs for LSW. Prior to joining Life Science Washington, he served as Director of Policy & External Affairs for Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), where he was actively involved in creating and advocating for several statewide bioscience initiatives including the Life Sciences Discovery Fund. He was also deeply involved in a range of PNNL’s philanthropic science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education partnerships and science education initiatives. Prior to moving to Washington state, Marc held a variety of policy and consulting positions in Washington, D.C. Marc has served on several gubernatorial task forces including the Washington Clean Energy Leadership Council and the Life Science & Global Health Advisory Council. His board service includes a number of statewide trade associations, including Washington Technology Industry Association (WTIA) and the Washington Clean Technology Alliance (WCTA). Marc loves playing tennis, waterskiing, mountain biking, and Oregon Pinot Noir.

  Alan Cantlin serves as a Principal for Trammell Crow Company’s Seattle office where his responsibilities include sourcing and executing new office development and investment opportunities with the team. With more than 20 years of commercial real estate experience, Mr. Cantlin has negotiated over 1 million square feet of commercial leases, approximately $100 million of construction contracts and overseen the disposition of over $550 million of commercial asset sales. Prior to joining Trammell Crow Company, Mr. Cantlin served as a principal at Madison Development Group, a local real estate development company focused on retail and mixed-use projects. At Madison Mr. Cantlin was responsible for ground-up retail development projects across the U.S. as well as the Luna mixed-use project in West Seattle. Prior to joining Madison, Mr. Cantlin was a Senior Investment Director at Schnitzer West where he focused on Eastside suburban office leasing and development. During his 10-year tenure, he negotiated more than 60 office leases totaling 1 million square feet and developed or re-developed four office projects totaling $280 million in cost. Mr. Cantlin began his real estate career as an investment banking analyst in the real estate groups at Banc of America Securities in San Francisco and Merrill Lynch in New York City.

  Dr. Will Canestaro is a venture capitalist, health economist and meta-epidemiologist with a demonstrated history of working in the biotechnology industry. He manages the Foundation’s biotech and engineering VC investment portfolio. Through WRF, Dr. Canestaro has made 25 investments in 19 Washington-based companies. Dr. Canestaro also teaches courses at the UW School of Business and School of Pharmacy on Health Innovation and Meta-Analytic methods, respectively. Dr. Canestaro earned his doctorate from the University of Washington’s School of Pharmacy Pharmaceutical Outcomes Research and Policy Program. He received an M.Sc. in medical anthropology from Oxford University and an A.B. in medical sociology from Dartmouth College.

  Pete Warsinske joined Flinn Ferguson Cresa in 2023. Pete began his real estate career with CBRE, where he earned Rookie of the Year for the Northwest Region early on and Top Producer by Title for most quarters he spent with the company. Pete is focused on understanding the nuanced business objectives of his clients in the healthcare, biotechnology, and high technology verticals and translating those through the most flexible and capital efficient real estate strategies.   Jeff West (he, him, his) is Fred Hutch’s vice president of Facilities & Campus Operations. West manages and provides overall leadership for Fred Hutch operations in Facilities Planning& Administration, Facilities Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety and General Operational Services. West is responsible for developing, executing and monitoring strategic plans and programs in operational areas reporting into him. Before coming to Fred Hutch in 2022, West was the vice president of Real Estate Strategy and Operations at Providence St. Joseph Health and oversaw the Real Estate, Facilities, Construction and Environmental Services departments in California.   With over 20 years of professional experience, I have conducted a broad range of laboratory, programming, design and project management services for complex Biomedical, Bioscience, Teaching Science, Physical Science, and Animal facility projects for university, industry, and governmental clients. I have developed a detailed understanding of state-of-the-art laboratory design concepts and the resulting impact on the building’s systems. Developing laboratory facilities that respond to user needs, have longevity, and create an environment conductive to world-class research within client’s budgetary requirements are things I strive for in each of my projects. I am passionate about collaboratively working with scientists to understand how they perform their highly complex work and then help them translate that into a viable, dynamic and productive work environment.   Roger Heeringa

  Roger Heeringa’s skill and passion for the structural engineering profession is evident in some of the most prominent buildings in the country. From the W Hotel in Hollywood and the 63 story Independent Tower in Austin to the recently completed 929 Office Tower in Bellevue, his expertise is apparent is all building types. After having earned a B.S. and M.S. from Washington State University, Heeringa started working for the then start-up firm, DCI Engineers in 1989. After 28 years, Heeringa’s career has seen him advance from a Project Engineer to becoming the President and COO at DCI. His experience in the design of economic structures has earned him many loyal, repeat clients among contractors, architects, and developers. Heeringa’s dedication to the overall development of a community is evident in his interest and participation in several committees dedicated to providing insight and a globally progressive engineering community. As a member of ASCE, SEAW, The Masonry Society, and The Council on Tall Buildings & Urban Habitat, Heeringa remains committed to national growth and industry advancement.   Brian Surratt is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Greater Seattle Partners (GSP), a public/private partnership that advances inclusive economic growth and competitiveness for the Puget Sound region. Previously, Brian was a vice president of community relations in the Seattle office of Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc., the leading urban real estate investment trust focused on building collaborative life science and technology campuses in the nation’s most dynamic innovation centers. He also served in various economic development leadership roles during his time with the city of Seattle and oversaw efforts that spanned workforce development, manufacturing growth, foreign-direct investment and anti-displacement strategies. He negotiated the city’s $1.2 billion development agreement to build Climate Pledge Arena and served as the policy lead in Seattle’s historic efforts as the first major city in the United States to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour.   Margaret McCormick, PhD, serves as executive director and chief operating officer of Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason (BRI) and also as vice president of research for Virginia Mason Medical Center. Dr. McCormick joined BRI in 2017 and previously served as BRI’s chief administrative officer, with direct oversight of operational functions including human resources, finance, facilities and safety. Over the past two decades, Dr. McCormick’s work has centered on launching, managing and investing in life science companies, frequently at the start-up level. Most recently, she served as CEO of Matrix Genetics, an industrial biotechnology company, spun out of Targeted Growth, Inc. Prior to that role, she held positions as chief operations officer at Targeted Growth, as a principal at Integra Ventures, as a consultant for McKinsey & Company and as Director of Business Development for the biomedical incubator and technology investment fund at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. McCormick received a PhD in biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Bachelor’s of Science from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Recently, she served as a trustee for both the Pacific Northwest Research Institute and the Life Science Discovery Fund Authority and is currently the Vice Chair and member of the Executive Committee of the Life Sciences Washington board.

  Megan has focused her career on the intersection of technology and social development. She is a leader in developing programs focused on human and planetary health with extensive experience building and directing complex technical projects in the energy, infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, and conservation fields. In her career she has developed innovative technology for emerging markets and with a goal toward maximizing global impact. As the Vice President of WGHA, Megan brings a strong background in developing global relationships with NGOs, Industry, Government, Academia, and Multilateral organizations to deliver sustainable and positive social impact. Prior to WGHA, Megan was a Portfolio Director for Global Good, a special collaboration between Bill Gates and Intellectual Ventures. While at Global Good, Megan directed a portfolio of technology development projects that included leading a team to develop a first-in-class model of the US Electrical Grid, a remotely deployable lung ultrasound system, super-donor assay, and a suite of initiatives geared toward supporting a circular economy. Additionally, she led Global Good’s collaborative efforts with multiple UN agencies to rapidly develop and deploy new products into developed and emerging markets. Megan earned her master’s degree in Climate and Renewable Energy from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and subsequently managed two university technology centers aimed at developing food and fuel from photosynthetic sources and instructing a new generation of clean technology scientists and policy makers. Additionally, she has managed two separate research labs: a BSL3+ facility with a vivarium focused on kidney organogenesis; and a BSL 2 facility focused on indoor and outdoor algae cultivation for biofuel and food. She is passionate about creating positive social impact on a global scale.

  Todd has over 30 years’ of experience in the building industry. Todd is a ‘native’ Seattleite as he moved to Seattle back in 1972 as the billboard, ‘The last one to leave Seattle turn off the lights?’ was situated along I-5. Todd graduated with a B.S. in Construction Management from the University of Washington in 1989 and joined Sellen Construction as a Project Engineer. Over a 28-year career at Sellen, he oversaw many iconic projects in the Northwest including Swedish Issaquah, a 600K SF downtown highrise, UW Foster School of Business, Paccar Business School, and UW Medicine South Lake Union. Todd moved on from Sellen in 2017 and joined Urban Visions where he spent five-years and was an Executive Vice President overseeing a $2.0B portfolio of commercial real estate developments in Seattle. Most recently, Todd has joined McKinstry as a Senior Director of Operations. As a longtime Seattle area resident, Todd enjoys many Northwest activities such as skiing, golf, fly fishing, and hiking.   Rob is an architect and Principal with HOK, based in the San Francisco studio. As Regional Leader of Science and Technology, Rob oversees projects between San Francisco and Seattle in the private and public sector, ranging from tenant improvements to new ground-up speculative and build-to-suit R&D buildings to multi-acre corporate campuses. Clients include biotech and technology companies at every stage of growth from early venture-backed to multi-national Fortune 500s, as well as globally recognized academic research universities.   Shanna Braga

  Shanna Braga joined ISB as Director of Facilities and Operations in 2021, and she manages ISB’s facility, real estate transactions, administrative and laboratory operations, environmental health and safety, and procurement. Shanna has worked in the real estate field for 17 years, and has managed healthcare facilities with a focus on life science buildings with laboratory facilities. She was part of managing the construction and installation of a high-end operating room in 2019, and her experience includes managing several state-of-the-art buildings in Seattle’s South Lake Union and Fremont neighborhoods. She focused on asset management, lease administration, contract negotiations, budgeting, building systems, and project management.   With 33 years in the design profession, Marc Oplinger is a seasoned project manager in both institutional and commercial projects. His portfolio includes life sciences, healthcare, corporate offices, mixed-use and educational facilities, from TI’s to urban redevelopment. An expert in project delivery from inception through construction, Marc’s emphasis is on inspired team leadership and collaboration. Marc has led the design of projects for a range of clients including RED Development, Vulcan Real Estate, and Alexandria Real Estate. He is currently overseeing design and entitlements on a Life Sciences Tower in South Lake Union and a Women’s Shelter co-development in Burien. Passionate about people (not just the project), Marc focuses on all aspects of what makes environments vibrant and sustaining.   As the founder and CEO of Urban Visions, Greg governs the strategy, direction, and value creation for the firm’s development portfolio. A fifth-generation Seattleite, Greg has over 30 years of industry experience and has formed more than 30 ventures with value in excess of $1.5 Billion. Notable past projects include Millennium Tower, 4th & Madison, 5th & Madison, 901 5th Avenue, and the Reedo Building. Current projects under design and construction include 200 Occidental, Second and Pike, Stadium East, and 888 2nd Ave. Prior to forming Urban Visions, Smith was a Principal of his father’s real estate property management firm, Martin Smith Inc., and the Founder/President of MSI’s development subsidiary, Martin Smith Development Corporation. A respected leader and frequent speaker in the community, Greg is embedded in the fabric of Seattle real estate. He is known for his strong engagement with key stakeholders as well as leadership roles in shaping land use and development patterns throughout key neighborhoods in Seattle. Greg currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Pacific North West chapter of the World Presidents Organization (Chapter Chair), and the University of Washington Foundation.
