On March 17, 1839, United Bank, originally known as the Northwestern Bank of Virginia, opened its doors. During the 42 years of the current administration and through 31 acquisitions, it has grown from a single-office, $100M bank to one of the most successful regional financial services companies in the U.S., with $19.3B in assets and offices throughout Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and South Carolina.

In less than three and a half years, and through three acquisitions, United more than doubled in size and increased its market share in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area — one of the most affluent and fastest-growing major markets in the nation. United is now the largest community bank headquartered in the D.C. metro region.

United’s 180th anniversary follows a highly notable year: Its parent company, United Bankshares Inc., reported record-breaking earnings, outperformed its Federal Reserve peer group and increased dividends to its shareholders for the 45th consecutive year — a record only one other major banking company in the nation has been able to achieve.

Furthermore, United’s employee volunteer program was recognized by the American Bankers Association as the best in the nation.

“We have a rich tradition of providing people-focused and community-minded financial services,” UBSI Chairman of the Board and CEO Richard M. Adams said. “Our mission has always been to provide excellence in service to our shareholders, employees, customers and communities. That commitment has positioned us for continued success in the future. Celebrating our anniversary is our way of thanking those who have supported us.”

Because United Bank’s founding falls on March 17, the company has established a long-standing tradition of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day along with its anniversary each year.

To show its appreciation for nearly two centuries of support, United invites customers and community members to visit a local branch today, March 15, and join the anniversary celebration.
