Report: Parking Space Ratio Declined In Seattle Over Last Decade

Seattle’s ratio of parking spaces per apartment unit dropped significantly over the last decade, according to a report from the National Apartment Association.

In Seattle, the parking ratio average fell from about 1.3 parking spaces per 1K SF of rental space to less than 1.1 spaces.

This trend is reflected in the Seattle City Council’s April decision to reduce the parking requirements for affordable housing buildings. Seattle removed many of the minimum parking requirements for affordable housing developments, while expanding bicycle parking requirements, Seattle Met reports.

The NAA report states that ride-hailing services like Lyft and Uber are changing car-ownership habits.

Nationally, one in five renters between the ages of 18 and 34 never plan to own a car and a quarter of those who do will opt for an electric or hybrid vehicle, the report said.
