Kilroy Realty Corp. is turning to artificial intelligence to increase the sustainability of its office buildings. The West Coast office REIT has partnered with Millbrae-based Stem to install 7.5-megawatt AI-driven energy storage systems at eight of its commercial buildings in California.

“Intelligent energy storage helps reduce the environmental footprint of our building operations,” Kilroy Realty Corp. Senior Vice President of Sustainability Sara Neff said.

The company will install its Athena-powered storage system this year in four San Francisco properties and four Los Angeles properties. These assets represent 20% of Kilroy’s stabilized office portfolio. Black Bear Energy facilitated the selection on behalf of Kilroy Realty.

Athena creates a network of energy storage and uses machine learning and big data, analyzing information at 400 megabytes per minute, to optimize energy use. Facilities are linked to a network of over 800 systems worldwide that form virtual power plants. Athena provides real-time data and automatically adapts energy usage away from expensive times.
