Paterson Ranch Sues School District Over Assignment Policy

Placeholder

Developers of the 500-home Paterson Ranch development have filed a lawsuit against the Fremont Unified School District.

At issue is the district’s policy of assigning future students to whatever schools have space for them. Homebuyers are not assigned a school when they purchase a home, which could result in siblings attending different schools, something the developers want to change. The district’s Board of Ed unanimously voted in September to uphold the policy for Patterson Ranch homes. Fremont Patterson Ranch LLC and Brookfield Bellaire LLC followed that decision with a suit, which also alleges that the district is demanding illegal mitigation payments or other benefits.

This is the latest example of tension between developers and school leaders in the area, all stemming from overcrowding and funding issues[IBA]
