OpenAI has two offices in San Francisco's Mission District and may be close to finding more, making it the latest AI company to expand in the Bay Area.

The artificial intelligence company behind the chatbot ChatGPT is in "serious" talks for a large but undisclosed amount of space in Uber's headquarters in Mission Bay, unnamed sources told the San Francisco Business Times.

The company reportedly has a requirement of around 200K SF with hopes to grow to about 500K SF, the Business Times reported.

Uber has been marketing one of the buildings in its four-building headquarters for sublease since 2021. The company never moved into the approximately 287K SF building at 1725 Third St.

"The deal with OpenAI is not final, and the details are fuzzy," the Business Times wrote.

OpenAI has reportedly been considering a number of locations and neighborhoods.

There's not a lack of available office space in San Francisco. Available sublease space in San Francisco reached 8.9M SF in the first quarter and the overall office availability rate was 32.7%.
