Breaking Down Title 24

San Francisco Office

Are you ready for the Title-24 energy code on July 1? One of the state's biggest crackdowns will be on lighting, which accounts for 30% of the state's electrical use, says Arup engineer Alex Lofting. We trekked to Arup's offices at 560 Mission last week for a packed crash course. In the new code, significant energy savings will result from requiring controls to dim the general lighting, according to occupancy, perimeter daylight, or demand response. Another major change is known as solar ready, in which all non-residential buildings three stories or fewer will have to identify 15% of net roof space for future installation of PV or solar hot water panels. Roof space may also need to contribute to daylighting top floors greater than 5K SF.
