LA Fitness is buffing up in the Bay Area—the health club chain just signed its first NorCal lease at the intersection of Brokaw and Oakland roads in San Jose. SVP and chief real estate officer Bill Horner, fifth from right in this group weight-lifting session (the ribbon weighs 800 lbs) tells us the company has an additional 10 deals in the works from Silicon Valley up through San Francisco. They rep a portion of the 50-plus clubs per year that LA Fitness plans to open nationally over the next four or five years. Bill says a fitness facility is a convenience business, so it’s important to be on people’s “normal path of travel” (and make it easier to choose a workout than a churroat 7-Eleven). Another factor: the evening commute home. Members are most likely to work up a sweat Monday through Thursday from 4pm to 7pm. “Seventy percent of our visits for the week are done by Thursday night.”
