The Alameda Renters Coalition, a tenant advocacy group, wants a November ballot item that would tie Alameda rental prices to the Bay Area's Consumer Price Index.

To get a charter amendment on the ballot, the group needs a verified 15% of the city's registered voters to sign a petition. Rising rent concerns have been contentious in Alameda, where a city council discussion of a moratorium on rent increases resulted in fights and required police intervention, according to the San Francisco Business Times.

The city council placed a 65-day moratorium on rent increases of 8% or higher and no-cause evictions. The council was set to vote on an ordinance limiting rent increases last night, but the coalition wants a cap on rent increases and worries landlords could find eviction loopholes. Median rent in the city grew by 54% between 2000 and 2013, outpacing renter income. [SFBT, IBA]
