The Urban Discovery Academy, an independent K-8 charter school that promotes project-based learning, community service and Spanish language instruction, at last has a permanent home. Governing board president MaeLin Levine says the new $10.5M campus is located in the very appropriate I.D.E.A. (innovation, design, education and the arts) district, an East Village neighborhood designed to promote projects that support the ability to live, work, shop and get educated in a walkable environment. KCM Group, a full-service consulting firm, served as project manager, handling all aspects of bond funding, and design and construction management. The 36k SF facility combines the renovation of an existing class structure with new construction that is designed to inject a modern, architecturally unique design. Melena Taylor, one of the academy’s founding students (grade 8), says that she likes the idea of looking out the window and seeing what’s going on in the world; it feels like being a part of everything.
